The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
