Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
